Into the Present: “You could be my IT girl” – Jason Derulo
On May 4, 2021, Netflix
started streaming a Korean drama (K-drama) with the title Start-up. The series
follows a lady who aspires to be an entrepreneur like Steve Jobs and her love triangle
with a man who is secretly her first love and another man who is posing as her
first love (Elaine, 2020).
Pursuing her dream to
become an entrepreneur, she teams up with one designer and three programmers:
the man pretending to be her first love and his two friends. Together, they
created fascinating applications: one can detect forged signatures and
handwriting, while the other uses artificial intelligence to help blind users
identify the object(s) in front of them. Near the end of the series, they were
also able to create a program that allows cars to drive themselves!
From watching the
K-drama, from seeing what could be made possible with Science and Technology
(S&T) and Information Technology (IT), and from realizing the number of people I
could help with both, I can say that if I were in the field of IT, I would like
to work as a programmer!
Aside from being a
programmer, having read the job description, and having watched Emily in Paris
and The Intern, I am also quite interested in being an internet or social media
marketing specialist!
Emily in Paris is a
series that revolves around Emily, an American with a degree in marketing who
was transferred to Paris, and her struggles to adjust and succeed in a French
workplace.
Meanwhile, The Intern is
a film about a 70-year-old widower working as a senior intern at an online
fashion site and how, with his wisdom and sense of humor, he forms a special
bond and friendship with his boss (IMDb, n.d.).
From the two productions,
I got an – perhaps exaggerated – idea and glimpse of what it’s like to work in
the online marketing field. And, working in an office and studio, creating
advertising campaigns, applying pricing strategies, and analyzing and targeting
the demographic data of our target audience is something that I can see myself
doing; hence, my interest in being an internet or social media marketing
specialist!
Looking into the present, I realized that, indeed, there are a lot of paths that I could walk in. Perhaps in another lifetime or another universe, I would or am working in the IT industry.
